Barrier Methods
Barrier methods are designed to stop sperm from entering the womb. The most commonly used barrier method is the condom but there are other options available. There are different options available and before looking at the individual methods it is worth looking at the overall advantages and disadvantages of using a barrier method.
Advantages of barrier contraception
- Barrier methods provide an option for women who cannot or do not want to use hormonal contraception.
- The condom is the only form of contraception that offers protection against most STIs if used properly.
- Barrier methods offer protection against unintended pregnancy without interfering with menstrual cycle, so there are no hormone-related side effects.
Disadvantages of barrier contraception
- Barrier methods are less reliable at preventing unintended pregnancy than hormonal methods.
- They require practice to be used effectively.
- They can interfere with spontaneity, sensation and pleasure.
