What is it?

The 3 day emergency contraceptive pill contains the hormone progestogen. It works by preventing or delaying your body from releasing an egg (ovulation), thereby preventing fertilization (when an egg and sperm meet and join together).

How reliable is it?

The 3 day emergency contraceptive pill should be taken as soon as possible and within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex. It is more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex.

Where can I get it?

This 3 day pill is available from pharmacies without a prescription or from a doctor, Family Planning Clinic or Well Woman Clinic. For medical card patients it is available on the GMS (General Medical Service) but only with prescription from a doctor.
